Video: What I Wish I Knew Before Starting Nursing School

Are you thinking about going to nursing school? Paula has some advice for you she wishes someone had told her before she started. Check out her vlog now!

Paula is a Nursing student at Prairie View A&M University in Texas. It’s only been a few months since her program started, but she’s still been through a lot with the hectic schedule Nursing students have. And she has some things to share that she wishes she knew before starting this rigorous curriculum. Check out the video below!

There’s a lot of reading

Most professors in nursing school recommend that you read about topics you’ll cover in class beforehand. Your professors will expect you to have read and understand the topics covered in these chapters. A lot of classes have pop quizzes too, so do the reading and be prepared!

Sometimes you teach yourself

Those chapters of reading cover a lot of topics, and your instructor might not have time in class to go over everything. That doesn’t mean that information won’t be on the test though. Even if you don’t go over it in class, you should make sure you understand the material you’re reading.

Follow the syllabus (even if the professor doesn’t)

Sometimes your professor will assign you reading in the syllabus but cover a different topic in class. That doesn’t mean the information you read about won’t be important or that it won’t be covered later. Stay on top of your syllabus, unless the professor tells you about a change.

Nursing textbooks are expensive

Your nursing textbooks will certainly cost a lot of money, especially since you need to purchase access codes to certain sites to go with books sometimes. Steer clear of the campus bookstore when you shop for textbooks—you can normally find them for less on Amazon or other booksellers like Chegg.

Prerequisites are your foundation

Most Nursing programs have some set of prerequisites before you get into the more refined classes for the major. Don’t forget what you’ve learned in these prerequisites. Professors don’t reteach you anything, and they’ll expect you to comprehend and remember what you learned in your prerequisites.

You get more time off (to study!)

Paula says many students in nursing school have classes only four days a week, then three days as an upperclassman. But those days off aren’t meant for you to relax or party—they’re built into your schedule so you have more time to get your reading done for class and for clinicals later on in your program.

Tests are different than high school

We all expect college to be different from high school, but sometimes it’s hard to know exactly how different ahead of time. In high school, you usually just have to know a singular answer. In nursing school, exams involve more critical thinking and problem-solving over direct answers.

I discovered CollegeXpress while embarking on my college search journey as an excited—but scared and way confused—high schooler without a counselor or college-bound sibling to give me advice. Let me tell you, I’m so glad that I stumbled on this community! CollegeXpress helped me find potential colleges and keep application deadlines straight. It gave me a great list of scholarships, and the blogs and emails made me feel like I wasn’t going it alone. Almost three years later and with freshman year of college down, I still love the CollegeXpress vibe so much that I’m writing for them. I’d recommend this site to anyone!

College Student

For the entire year before college, I spent a lot of time deeply considering what major I wanted to go into and how to fund my higher education. After a lot of research, I came across CollegeXpress, which helped me ultimately find a ton of scholarships for which I could apply—and some of which I received! If it weren’t for CollegeXpress, I may not have found those scholarships as they didn't appear on any other scholarship search forum. Additionally, I learned more about the options I had been considering for my major through CollegeXpress’s resources. In the end, I chose to major in Computer Science, as it seemed best suited to me and the careers in the field seemed enjoyable, and I've never been more excited to move into my future! Ultimately, I want to thank CollegeXpress for offering their services. I received enough financial aid in scholarships to fund my entire freshman year of college and even got some money refunded which I used to purchase a new laptop, and I bought all of the books I needed for the semester!

I used CollegeXpress to search for colleges. It helped me narrow down the schools on the West Coast and which schools had Construction Engineering programs. I made my decision to go to OSU and I am so excited about it.

My high school counselor introduced me to CollegeXpress freshman year. It has made such a difference in high school, and I plan to continue relying on it in college. CollegeXpress is my go-to because it addresses each aspect of being a student. There are the articles you’d expect regarding college applications and financial aid, but you will also find advice on things like de-stressing and maintaining relationships while balancing a heavy course load. CollegeXpress will also keep you updated on current scholarships through e-mails each Saturday. (They don’t harass you with any product promotion like so many other sites do.) CollegeXpress is a lot like an older sibling who has already conquered the challenges you are facing. Now, they are reaching out a helpful hand. I say take it.
